It is no longer news that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)  days ago published a notice, calling for expression of interest by its members for appointment into the Court of Appeal Bench.
The statement, in parts, reads:

"Dear Colleagues,
RE: APPOINTMENT OF SIXTEEN (16) JUSTICES FOR THE COURT OF APPEAL
BENCH: CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
By a letter dated 28th September 2022 and received on 30th September 2022, the Honourable,
the President of the Court of Appeal has requested the Nigerian Bar Association to recommend
suitably qualified persons, for consideration for appointment to the Court of Appeal Bench, to
fill the present and imminent vacancies.
The slots available for nomination are:
(a)
Two (2) slots for the North-Central geo-political zone
(b)
Three (3) slots for the North-East geo-political zone
(c)
Five (5) slots for the North-West geo-political zone
(d)
Three (3) slots for the South-East geo-political zone
(e)
Two (2) slots for the South-West geo-political zone
(f)
One (1) slot for the South-South geo-political zone.
Members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) who are suitably qualified and are interested
in applying for appointment to the Court of Appeal Bench, are enjoined to submit expression
of interest to the National Secretariat of the NBA on or before the 5th day of October 2022. All
correspondences should be addressed to:
The President
Nigerian Bar Association

National Secretariat
Plot 1101 Cadastral Zone A00
Central Business District
Abuja.
All expressions of interest should include the following attached"

Sequel to that, reactions have continued to trail the said NBA Notice:
On his part, Meti M. Ukpeh, Esq., while speaking with correspondents of B.A News said thus: " it is greatly commendable of our noble NBA and Court of Appeal to have lawyers directly from the Bar be appointed to the Court of Appeal. However, l am apparently uncomfortable with the stratification or allotment of the slots by our NBA. Giving just one(1) slot to south south zone is not worth it, just to say the least. I do not think there is a better explanation to giving one slot to south south which has six states therein, just like other zones/regions-- Northeast and Southwest, except for  North-central (7), Northwest (7) and Southeast (5). Equity demands proper reflection for the south south to avoid setting a bad precedent for future appointments. Consequently, may l use this medium to call on our noble President of NBA, Y. C. Maikyau, SAN, whom I personally have great respect and admiration for, to reconcile these imbalances to forestall a would-be bad precedent that may hunt the future. Thank you."

The Human Rights Lawyer and Public Affairs Analyst concluded his statement and we could only say: keep your fingers crossed as the events unfold and we will surely bring it to your doorsteps.
